What Is Coaching?
Dee Marshall
Founder/Coach
Coaching is an ongoing professional relationship between a Coach and a Client. The coaching partnership is established with the intent of helping the Client get from where he/she is to where he/she wants to be…in your career, business, relationships, etc. The Client sets the agenda and the Coach provides focus, structure and support to assist the Client to achieve his/her personal and professional goals.
The context of Coaching is conducted via telephone, typically one weekly call – three times per month.
Your Coach serves as a sounding board, a thinking and accountability partner. Your Coach listens to you, asks questions, lends support, guides you and challenges you. Together, we will strategize to get your business off the ground, grow your business, change careers, advance in your career, or whatever goal you’d like to achieve. You bring the agenda and we help you to get there.

Coaching Vs. Therapy
Therapy deals with healing pain, dysfunction and conflict within an individual or in a relationship between two or more individuals. The focus of therapy is often to address unresolved issues from the past that hamper an individual's emotional functioning in the present, to improve overall psychological functioning, and to deal with present life and work circumstances in more emotionally healthy ways.
Coaching deals with healthy, well individuals who are focused on the present and the future. Coaching concentrates on where an individual is now and what he/she is willing to do to get where he/she wants to be in the future.
Coaching vs. Consulting
Consultants are retained by individuals or organizations to access specialized expertise. While consulting approaches vary widely, there is often an assumption that the consultant diagnoses problems/identifies gaps and prescribes, and sometimes implements, solutions.
Coaches do not need any specialized expertise within the area in which their client requires support. Coaches are skilled in powerful questioning, active listening and facilitative learning that results in enabling an individual to find answers within him/herself.
Coaching vs. Mentoring
Mentoring is most often considered a method of guiding another, from one’s own experience or sharing his/her experiences in a specific area of industry or career development. Mentors can guide you and assist you in learning from his/her mistakes and successes. Mentors typically do not charge for their services.
Coaching focuses on “who” you are and not “what” you do. Coaches have an excellent understanding of human nature having been trained to coach many different types of personalities and becomes engaged both in the individual’s professional and personal lives. Coaches charge for their services.
